When renowned underwater researcher Jacques Cousteau first visited Cozumel in 1962, it didn’t take long for him to declare it one of the most spectacular scuba diving sites in the world. Ever since, the island has gained an international reputation as one of the premier diving destinations in the Western Hemisphere, attracting thousands of divers and snorkelers to its underwater panorama.
Scuba diving capital of the Americas and home to the world’s second-largest coral reef system, Cozumel is ringed by more than 37 dive sites teaming with tropical fish and a kaleidoscope of multi-colored coral reefs.
The exceptionally beautiful aquamarine waters are virtually transparent, providing divers with a visibility of up to 200 feet, 20 miles of coral reef, and water so translucent that divers seem to fly instead of swimming. It is no wonder that Cozumel attracts more than 80,000 divers a year.
Most of Cozumel’s diving sites are located within the Cozumel National Reefs Marine Park, a protected underwater environment whose authority has implemented a conservation program funded by $2.00 US tax from divers.
